Connecticut Magazine TRANSPORTATION Ease of transportation is one of the Hartford area's great assets, attracting business, economic development, and commuters. The two interstate highways that intersect in Hartford are Interstate 91 North-South, and Interstate-84 East-West. These routes provide connections with the Connecticut and Massachusetts turnpikes and a network of many other roads and highways. During rush hour, controlled high occupancy vehicle lanes cut commuting time for car poolers and reduce the number of vehicles on the highways. Hartford's Union Station Transportation Center, a century old restored brownstone, is the region's central rail and bus station. Taxi and airport limousine service is also offered from the center. Amtrak operates passenger service to major points throughout the country, including New York, Washington, and Boston. Several other interstate bus companies provide long distance passenger service. The Hartford area offers many freight travel options, with two freight rail lines. The Connecticut river flows south through Greater Hartford to Long Island Sound 36 miles away. Direct sea access for barge, coastal tanker traffic, and recreational boaters is provided. Just 12 miles north of Hartford is Bradley International Airport, the state's largest air facility and the second busiest in New England. Bradley Airport
